May 14,2011 Awakened during the night to some brilliant flashes of lightening (Not too much thunder) & a little rain. At 6:30 am the navy personnel started their day with colors. So we decided it was time for us to get up ,too. We were able to pull gently away from our dock by 9 am but our timing stunk. Just as we entered the channel one of the navy warships docked next to us decided to leave. So we had to head back down the ICW & wait while they turned & headed out the Newport River towards the Sound. Once they were gone we were able to start our journey north (again) on the ICW. We cruised up the Adams Creek Canal which brought us into Adams Creek. That dumped us into the Neuse River (a BIGGG river) We did see off in the distance Oriental, NC. We had visited this area years ago (by land) & always said we'd like to come back on a boat someday. After about 20 miles in this river we crossed back into the ICW & up the Bay River . We passed by a barge that was doing some dredging right on the side of the channel (They have to dredge all the time down here to keep the ICW open). The Bay River brought us back out into the Pamlico River, which is part of Pamlico Sound. After only 10 miles we headed up the Pungo River & turned into our anchorage area on Slade Creek. We're still in sight of the ICW but very protected behind a point of land, in 9 ft. of water. Today we did 65 miles, but they were mostly relaxing, "out in the middle of big bodies of water", autopilot, miles. (ICW mile 140)
